WordPress Campus Connect in Makerere: My experiences

By Sharebility

There is something exciting about bringing technology, creativity and young minds together in one space. My experience with WordPress Campus Connect at Makerere University was a reminder of the growing opportunities that digital technologies offer to students, educators, entrepreneurs and young innovators in Uganda.

WordPress is more than a platform for creating websites. It is an open-source tool that empowers people to share ideas, build digital solutions, establish online businesses and participate in the global digital economy. Campus Connect provides an opportunity to introduce university students to these possibilities while strengthening the connection between academic learning and practical technology skills.

Beyond the Classroom: Learning Through Technology

One of the things that makes initiatives such as WordPress Campus Connect meaningful is their ability to connect theoretical knowledge with practical application.

In today’s digital world, having academic qualifications alone may not be enough. Young people need opportunities to develop practical skills that enable them to solve real-world problems. Website development, content management, digital publishing and online entrepreneurship are some of the areas where WordPress can make a difference.

The experience reinforced my belief that universities should continue creating spaces where students can experiment with technology, exchange ideas and discover opportunities beyond their academic programmes.

The Power of Open-Source Technology

What makes WordPress particularly interesting is its open-source nature. It gives individuals and organisations the opportunity to create and manage websites without necessarily having to build everything from scratch.

For students, this opens doors to learning web development, creating portfolios, developing business websites, publishing research and building platforms that address community needs.

For educators, WordPress presents opportunities to develop educational websites, share learning resources and support digital learning initiatives.

I believe that exposing more young Ugandans to open-source technologies can contribute to a generation of creators rather than simply consumers of digital content.

Networking and the WordPress Community

Another important aspect of Campus Connect is the opportunity to appreciate the value of communities in technology.

Technology grows through collaboration, knowledge sharing and continuous learning. Bringing students and members of the WordPress community together creates opportunities for mentorship, professional connections and future collaboration.

It also demonstrates that one does not have to work alone when pursuing a career in technology. There is a wider community willing to share knowledge, experiences and opportunities.

Reflections on Uganda’s Digital Future

As Uganda continues embracing digital transformation, initiatives such as WordPress Campus Connect deserve greater attention.

Our universities have talented young people with ideas that could become innovative digital products, businesses and solutions to local challenges. However, talent needs exposure, practical opportunities and supportive communities to flourish.

I would like to see more institutions of higher learning embrace practical technology engagements, open-source communities, digital skills training and innovation programmes.

WordPress can be an entry point for students who want to explore technology, but the bigger goal should be to nurture problem-solvers, creators and digitally empowered citizens.

My Takeaway

My reflection from WordPress Campus Connect at Makerere is simple: technology education should not end with learning concepts in lecture rooms. Students need opportunities to create, experiment, collaborate and transform their ideas into practical solutions.

The future of Uganda’s digital economy will depend partly on how effectively we prepare young people to participate in it.

I remain encouraged by the role of the WordPress community in promoting open-source technology, knowledge sharing and digital empowerment.
